World's Favorite songs
sept 29-2005
We Are The Champions by Queen has been voted the world's favourite song. The 1977 classic - a favourite on the football terraces - topped a global survey of 700,000 music fans in 66 countries. But in the UK it didn't even make the top 10 - instead Michael Jackson was at number one with Billie Jean. Jackson had a remarkable seven hits in the UK top 10. In the global poll, We Are The Champions was followed by Britney Spears hit Toxic. Billie Jean was third, ahead of Hotel California by The Eagles. Latin American superstar Shakira was fifth with her song La Tortura. Smells Like Teen Spirit from Nirvana was sixth. The Beatles had their only entry at number seven with Yesterday. U2's One was eighth, Imagine by John Lennon was ninth, and Dire Straits hit Sultans of Swing was 10th. The global poll was conducted by Sony Ericsson to launch its new Walkman phone. "We Are The Champions is an anthem worldwide both in music and sporting arenas. It conveys the passion music brings to our lives and proves a classic rock song is truly timeless," said Sony Ericsson corporate vice president Dee Dutta. In the UK, Michael Jackson fans were busy casting their votes. The Jacko songs in the top 10 were Billie Jean, Thriller, Beat It, Smooth Criminal, We've Had Enough, Black Or White and You Rock My World. The only other songs to make it were Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, Angels by Robbie Williams and Welcome to the Jungle by Guns N' Roses.

Premios Juventud
sept 22-2005

Males and females shook it on and off the stage, at the University of Miami Convocation Center during Thursday night's Premios Juventud, Univisión's latest entry into the glutted field of locally produced awards shows. Shakira, whose gyrations are legendary, did not perform, but she thrilled her fans when, accepting her first of five awards, she flexed her pecs, lifting her (fully clad) bosom several inches. She was illustrating why she won the ''How Yummy She/He Moves'' award. Juventud is a mostly people's-choice award, with categories like ''The Girl Who Keeps Me Up At Night'' and ''Song To Slash My Veins For.'' Its success when it debuted last year took Univisión by surprise, according to insiders -- the network enforces a notorious omertá and only publicists are allowed to talk to the press. The show, which is in its second year, doesn't take itself seriously. It's about youth and fun, and it hits the spot. Almost. Sure, the host couple came out in head-to-toe black leather, the floor resembled a mosh pit, reggaeton ruled, and all that booty dancing. But there were signs of the old culture of Univisión and Mexico's Televisa, which used to own the U.S. network. In a tailored outfit, Don Francisco, host of Univisión's Sabado Gigante, was a presenter, as was news anchor Jorge Ramos, also suited. Christian Castro, the popster son of Televisa's aging diva Veronica Castro, got a show of professionally made signs of adoration from his fan clubs, but his performance fell flat. Olga Tañón, the Puerto Rican merenguera, seemed to have outgrown, quite literally, her sex-tigress image, no matter how much she stripped down and wiggled. And Jaguares, a classic Mexican rock band, got little response. Most notable was the mention of Thalía, Televisa's princess bride (to Tommy Mottola). She not only won none of the awards she was nominated for, but her name triggered boos.

International Superstar Shakira Makes History with Biggest Spanish Language Album Debut Ever
June 15,2005
Thanks to Joster

NEW YORK, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- From the very start of her stellar career the internationally revered creative force Shakira has been a leader in bridging cultures through her music. And today, she makes musical and cultural history with the debut of her new Spanish language album Fijacion Oral vol. 1 which sold over 157,000 copies in its first week of release, charting at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart. With this remarkable debut, Shakira's new album marks the biggest one week sales and highest chart debut for a Spanish language release in the Soundscan era. Sales of Fijacion Oral vol. 1 more than doubles the record set by Ricky Martin in 2003 when his album debuted at #12 selling 65,000 copies. Fijacion Oral vol. l also debuted at #1 on the Billboard Latin Album chart and is #1 in Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Central America, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina and Chile. The album made impressive debuts in many non-Hispanic markets as well, with at #2 debut in Germany and a #3 debut in Austria and Switzerland. Shakira's first single "La Tortura" featuring Spanish superstar Alejandro Sanz fast became a #1 radio smash around the globe, including the U.S. Latin chart where it currently sits at the top. In addition, Shakira's video for "La Tortura" broke new ground as the first Spanish language video added into regular rotation on MTV and VH-1. And when MTV aired Making of the Video: Shakira last month, it marked the first time in history that MTV broadcasted a Making of the Video entirely in Spanish. "La Tortura" was also AOL's biggest Spanish language video ever and the most streamed Spanish language video on Yahoo! Music. It also hit #1 on the iTunes Pop and Latin album charts. And the fans have responded. On June 6th, more than 150,000 fans poured into Madrid's historic La Puerta de Alcala to see Shakira perform in celebration of the launch of Fijacion Oral vol. 1. On June 8th, her New York appearance at the Virgin Megastore in Times Square drew masses of fans closing down several city blocks. Over the next two days, Shakira's explosive CD signings in Miami and then Puerto Rico attracted thousands and thousands of fans. In 2001, Shakira went from Latin American superstar to revered musical world power with the release of Laundry Service, her 13x platinum English album, which earned her the title as the biggest Latin female crossover artist in the world. Her career can already boast a string of chart-topping hits in both English and Spanish, career sales of 25 million albums and three Latin Grammys including the Best Latin Pop Album Grammy for her acclaimed MTV Unplugged album. Fijacion Oral vol. 1 is just the beginning. In November, a completely new body of work, an English album entitled Oral Fixation vol. 2 hits stores on November 15, 2005.

"me and Juanes were in the same flight, sat next to each other", She told her fans who were very organized at the begining but later lost control and try to approach her.
In between screams of her fans saying how they love her, she said that She came to introduce her new cd to her old friends and the people who had been essencial in her career.
The press conference will be taking place tomorrow at the Radisson Hotel, Shakira will also do some work today at "pies Descalzos" in Bogota and She is also planning to go to other place in Colombia. "I'm going to Choco to visit one of The schools that our foundation has built, this will be the first time that I travel to this state" said the excited singer.

AUG 20,2004
Radio giant Clear Channel Communications Inc. said today that it will raise money for Hurricane Charley victims by auctioning off guitars autographed by musical stars, among them Britney Spears, Tom Petty and Kenny Rogers. ADVERTISEMENT The San Antonio-based company said the online auction of 43 guitars signed by celebrities started this afternoon and will end on Sept. 20. John Hogan, who heads Clear Channel's radio division, said the company's radio outlets in Florida and elsewhere have also been active in raising relief funds for victims of the hurricane, which killed at least 22 people and caused an estimated $7.4 billion in damage to homes, businesses and other property. "This auction is another way for individuals to support those in need," Hogan said. "At the same time, the guitars are great pieces of memorabilia for any music fan." The company says all proceeds will be split between displaced families and the American Red Cross. The autographed guitars being offered on Clear Channel's StormAid.com Web site are divided into five music genres -- rock, classic rock, pop and urban, alternative and country. Stone Temple Pilots, Linkin Park, Nickelback, ZZ Top, Tim McGraw and Shakira are among the other musical acts participating. There's also a non-musical category that includes instruments signed by conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh and comic actor Mike Myers.

Latin Acts Tread Carefully with Crossover Bids
Jan 17,2004
MIAMI (Billboard) - They say you can never go home again. And while many Latin acts are trying to disprove that maxim, they are finding a grain of truth in it as they attempt to return to their initial fan bases after recording in English. Conversely, some Latin acts are finding it difficult to break into the English market after years of success in the Spanish market. This year Shakira, Marc Anthony and Paulina Rubio will release new Spanish albums after various degrees of success with English releases. Ricky Martin (news) will deliver his first English album in a number of years. But the crossover phenomenon, once regarded as a slam-dunk to gain broader exposure and bigger audiences for Latin acts, is treated by labels with more caution in the face of shrinking budgets and diminished sales across the board. That's because even when targeting the English audience, there must be specific attention to the Latin artist's original Spanish fan base through additional tracks in Spanish, music videos and other costly marketing tactics. "A crossover act has to record twice, film two videos, do two separate promotions," says Emilio Estefan, who has produced albums for Shakira and Gloria Estefan (news). Nowadays, he says, with sales slowing, it is harder to justify that investment in major crossover acts, unless the label believes the artist can achieve international success. "You have to be persistent, you have to invest money and you have to look for artists who not only have a U.S. market but who can be global," Estefan says. "Obviously, the possibility of a crossover opens the door to an American market, and that's beneficial," says John Echevarria, president of Universal Music Latino. "But it's a double-edged sword. Do it well, and it's marvelous. Do it wrong, and it can hurt your fan base." Martin did it well with his 1999 self-titled English-language debut. According to Nielsen SoundScan, it has sold 7 million units in the U.S. alone. Enrique Iglesias (news)' 2001 "Escape," his second English-language album, sold 3.4 million copies, while Shakira's 2002 English-language debut, "Laundry Service," sold 3.3 million. All these albums racked up impressive global sales as well. "To me, being Latino is an advantage," Iglesias says. "In the world of Anglo pop, where there aren't that many Latinos, I look at it as an advantage. I think it's cool. It has opened my mind musically in so many ways. Even if my music doesn't sound Latin." But buyers are fickle, and success in one language doesn't guarantee success in another. Iglesias' most recent English-language album, "7," has sold only 260,000 copies since its release in November, only slightly more than his 2001 Spanish-language release, "Quizas," which scanned 241,000 copies. Those numbers are considered high for a Spanish-language release but not for a major English-language artist, and not for an artist who is supposed to have two fan bases. Similarly, Thalia's self-titled Spanish-language disc scanned 179,000 copies, while her English debut of the same name has scanned only 184,000 copies since its release last summer, although it debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200. Rubio scanned 480,000 copies of her 2000 Spanish-language album "Paulina." It was the biggest-selling Spanish-language album for 2001, according to the Billboard year-end charts. But her English-language debut, "Border Girl," has scanned 270,000 copies. LATIN EXPLOSION? Crossover acts, of course, are not new. Long before Martin or Estefan, there were many cases of Latin artists recording in English and vice versa, from Jose Feliciano (news), Xavier Cugat and Julio Iglesias (news) to Eydie Gorme and Paul Anka (news). But the new wave of crossovers from the late 1990s was dubbed the "Latin explosion" by the media and garnered unprecedented worldwide attention. Even in the best of cases, replicating that type of buzz and success is difficult. The current crop of artists is under an unprecedented media spotlight. "It was a moment in time and a sentiment, and it's something we very consciously and deliberately and by design tried to create, and it worked," says Thomas D. Mottola, chairman/CEO of Casablanca Records and Champion Entertainment. Mottola, who until last year was chairman/CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, was behind the careers of many of the most successful crossovers, including those of Martin, Anthony and Shakira. But the term "Latin explosion," he says, was simply coined by the media and used by labels to market their acts. "There never really was a Latin explosion," Mottola says. "It was a mirage. And two of the biggest stars were from the Bronx, N.Y. But we used it to take gigantic advantage of it, and lots of our stars benefited from that." In the aftermath of that era, sustaining a career in two languages is absolutely possible, he adds. "The essence of our business has never changed. It all depends on the quality of your material and the records and the performances the artists give." But admittedly, it's tricky. TROUBLE AT HOME There are many reasons why an album doesn't sell as well as expected. But when it comes to crossover acts, part of the problem is that the artist's core market -- the Latin buyer -- may not be buying the English album. And it isn't doing so, sources say, because some artists no longer have time to properly promote in that market because the artist is trying to serve two masters. "The Latin market, from radio to media to the public, feels abandoned," one executive says. "They feel betrayed. There are artists who do nothing with Spanish media . And everyone who made that artist into a star in the first place then feels pushed aside." Not so fast, says Kevin Lawrie, president of Sony Music Norte. "People are always looking for an excuse to justify when an album didn't do well. I think it has to do more with the music and the moment than anything else." Crossing over, Lawrie adds, can absolutely be a good thing for any artist in any language. "The more people you reach, the better. And as long as the music isn't compromised or bastardized, it will work in another language." "It's like both my arms," Anthony told Billboard in 2001, describing what it's like to record in English and Spanish. "I was born and raised in East Harlem. The music that my grandmother and mother would play at home wasn't the music that I would hear on the corner when I would hang out with my friends. When you say 'crossover,' that means you're crossing over and you don't belong. I don't believe that. I am both, I am both, I am both." Reuters/Billboard

TOO SEXY FOR THEIR CAUSE
Jan 12, 2004

A GLOSSY picture book featuring French screen siren Emmanuelle Beart on charity missions has highlighted the use of an unlikely new weapon in the war on want - the "humanitarian playmate". While the United Nations has recruited celebrities as "ambassadors" for decades, its current preference for stars with sex appeal is prompting disquiet in the aid world. Beart - who won fame dancing naked in the 1986 film Manon des Sources, co-starred with Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible and modelled for Christian Dior - has a history of involvement in social causes. But while no-one doubts her good intentions, the book published in Paris last week with the UN's blessing looks more like a fashion catalogue than a call to end cruelty to children She takes her designer wardrobe to settings from Mauritania, where she witnessed the ravages of water shortages, to Vietnam, where the scourge is malnutrition; from Mali, where she helped to promote health care among children, to Thailand, where she was shocked by their sexual exploitation. Not that she is the first celebrity UN ambassador to have put her impressions into print. With the growth of the anti-globalisation movement, the record of a star's journey to a pocket of want is becoming a publishing fashion. American actress Angelina Jolie produced a book about her travels on behalf of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Ex-Spice Girl Gerri Halliwell and Colombian singer Shakira have also toiled for the UN cause. Beart's book, Sous Nos Yeux (Before Our Eyes), shows her tearfullly consoling a Thai woman who told the actor her mother sold her into prostitution at age 10. Elsewhere, she is seen cuddling babies and helping vaccinate children in Mali. It is these artistic images of a soulful-looking Beart in the wilds that prompted murmuring in Paris about humanitarian playmates. "Emmanuelle Beart has no credibility or legitimacy in the task of reducing malnutrition in Mali," said Rony Brauman, founder of the Nobel prize-winning aid agency Medecins Sans Frontieres. As for Beart, she said she wanted more than a sinecure. "It is much more than a question of making available my name," she writes. "I agreed to give my time and my soul."

UNICEF to celebrate 50 years of celebrity advocacy Katie Couric, ?ER,? Sir Peter Ustinov, Sir Roger Moore, Harry Belafonte, Vanessa Redgrave, Nana Mouskouri and George Harrison To Be Honored LOS ANGELES - Virtually every non-profit organization in the world enlists the support of well-known individuals to help advance its work ? but in 1953 it was a different story. That was the year that a chance encounter on an airplane brought together the beloved entertainer Danny Kaye and the then-executive director of UNICEF, who together forged a new kind of partnership between celebrities and global causes. The following year, Danny Kaye became UNICEF?s first Goodwill Ambassador, and began 33 years of traveling the world to promote the needs and rights of children. On 3 December, at the UNICEF Goodwill Gala, UNICEF will celebrate 50 years of celebrity advocacy and honor the esteemed individuals ? stars from stage, screen, sport and music ? who have followed in Mr. Kaye?s footsteps. UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Whoopi Goldberg tol host the Gala and Halle Berry will serve as honorary event chair. The event marks a half-century since UNICEF became the first global organization to recognize and harness the power of celebrity to further worldwide issues and causes. The gala, to be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, will benefit the ?Audrey Hepburn All Children in School Fund? to help UNICEF provide 120 million children in developing nations access to a quality basic education. ?UNICEF?s Ambassadors and celebrity supporters are committed to improving the lives of children in the developing world by making the rest of us aware of the struggles they face each day,? said Carol Bellamy, Executive Director of UNICEF. ?It?s this commitment that reflects their true star quality, not the glitter and glamour of being a star but the way they use their notoriety to help the world?s children. Thanks to their involvement with UNICEF, we raise millions of dollars every year to ensure every child?s right to health, education, equality and protection.? UNICEF will pay tribute to George Harrison, whose 1971 Concert for Bangladesh marked the first time musicians collaborated for a common humanitarian cause; and honor its leading Goodwill Ambassadors Sir Peter Ustinov, Sir Roger Moore, Harry Belafonte, Vanessa Redgrave and Nana Mouskouri, who have been stalwart champions for children for more than a decade each. Katie Couric, who encouraged the millions of Today show viewers to Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, will receive a special UNICEF award, as well as NBC?s ?ER,? who have devoted entire storylines to humanizing distant and neglected populations, such as in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria and Croatia. The Danny Kaye Humanitarian Award The Danny Kaye Humanitarian Award will be given to a public figure who, like Danny Kaye in his time, has been a pioneer for celebrity activism. Katie Couric, co-anchor of NBC?s ?Today,? has used her celebrity to inform and empower her audience. By fusing her philanthropic, personal and professional interests, Katie Couric is being recognized for her transformative advocacy on behalf of children. Humanitarianism through the Arts Award Executive producer John Wells, along with select cast members, will accept a special award on behalf of the television series ?ER? for its social responsibility in bringing awareness to humanitarian crises in such countries as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Croatia. This attention from a major television show, rare by any measure, has undoubtedly helped to humanize distant struggles for millions of viewers around the world. Jessica Lange, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador who recently visited the Congo on behalf of the organization, will present this award. The UNICEF Goodwill Laureate Award UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors Sir Peter Ustinov, Sir Roger Moore, Harry Belafonte, Vanessa Redgrave and Nana Mouskouri will be honored for their life-long dedication to improving the lives of children throughout the world. These Ambassadors have traveled far from the comforts of their homes, using the power of their popularity to support UNICEF?s work to ensure child survival, expand immunization programs, enroll children in school, assist children affected by HIV/AIDS, and to fight for child rights. A Tribute to George Harrison A visionary humanitarian, George Harrison used his celebrity and his music to bring children?s needs to a global stage. His legendary Concert for Bangladesh, organized by Mr. Harrison and Ravi Shankar, marked the first time musicians collaborated for a common humanitarian cause. The 1971 concert pioneered the all-star rock benefit concert model, which has since been widely emulated for various causes worldwide. Ravi Shankar will attend and Billy Preston will perform a selection of Harrison?s songs. The Corporate Responsibility Award UNICEF will present Mattel with the Corporate Responsibility Award, which honors a company that has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to philanthropic activity benefiting children. FRESH LAUNDRY
OCT 31,2003
Call it Shakira, reloaded. With the help of the high-powered songwriting team known as the Matrix, the Colombian singer is exploring her '80s-rock roots for her second English-language album, due next August. ''She comes from the Latino thing, but she's so well-versed in cool rock music,'' says the Matrix's Lauren Christy, whose three-member collective has crafted hits for Avril Lavigne (''Sk8er Boi''), Liz Phair (''Why Can't I''), and Hilary Duff (''So Yesterday''). ''The main influences that we were dealing with were the Cure and the Pretenders. That's what she was pushing us to do.'' With its pop hooks, Latin beats, and belly-dancing videos, Shakira's oddly titled 2001 album ''Laundry Service'' went three-times platinum, and showed Anglos why she was already a Latin-music superstar. But despite that formula's success, Shakira is looking whenever, wherever for inspiration this time. ''She's not really focused on doing Latin rhythms on this new record,'' says Matrix member Scott Spock. ''It more of a combination of things. She'll start with a rock-type feel, and maybe throw in an Arabian-type rhythm underneath it. And then throw in a Latin guitar.'' Though Shakira has met with mixed critical reception in the U.S. (EW called her an ''unapologetic Charo for a new generation''), the Matrix's Christy insists that the singer -- who produces her own music -- is ''totally in control of every aspect of what she's doing. She knows what she's doing lyrically and musically, from the hi-hat to the kick [drum] to every keyboard part.'' Adds Christy, ''She worked us so hard -- by the end of the week, I was exhausted. I felt she'd drained every idea out of me.. She's kind of like Prince.'' The singer-songwriter has enlisted R&B scribe Dallas Austin (TLC, Madonna), for songwriting help. In addition, she'll likely return to some of the tunesmiths who aided her on ''Laundry Service,'' according to her publicist. Among the seven songs written with the Matrix are ''Bad Weather'' and ''Love is Just a Stranger,'' which Christy describes as ''kind of dark, with cool guitars.'' Shakira will spend some of her time between now and the CD's release working in a just-announced role as a goodwill ambassador for children's charity UNICEF. And in the meantime, her publicist warns, everything could change: ''Along the way Shakira could very well decide to do a waltz concept album. So until the fat lady sings, we don't know.'' Which, by the way, doesn't mean Shakira's self-transformation will extend to a weight gain.

Shakira Appointed Unicef Goodwill Ambassador for Children
OCT 24,2003
Grammy Award-winning musician Shakira has been appointed a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, the United Nations children’s agency said Friday. The 26-year-old is the youngest person and the first Colombian to serve as UNICEF ambassador . “UNICEF has done tremendous work in my home nation ... and I have seen firsthand the difference UNICEF makes,” said Shakira in a statement released by the agency. “It’s rewarding to know that I join such a great list of stars supporting UNICEF, and can personally contribute to improving the lives and futures of children.” Since 1954, when the late comedian Danny Kaye became the first goodwill ambassador for UNICEF – or the United Nations Children’s Fund – leading personalities in the arts, sports, literature and public life have travelled the world advertising the world body’s work. Shakira, who lives in Miami and has won a Latin Grammy and numerous MTV music awards, joins a roster of past and present UNICEF ambassadors that also includes the late Audrey Hepburn, Harry Belafonte, Sir Roger Moore, Vanessa Redgrave, Jessica Lange and Mia Farrow. “Since (1954) celebrities have contributed greatly to UNICEF and served as voices for those who frequently have no voice – the world’s children,” said UNICEF chief Carol Bellamy. “Shakira, like all our goodwill ambassadors, was chosen based on her compassion, her involvement in global issues, her deep commitment to helping children, and her appeal to young people around the world. “I know she’ll help bring UNICEF’s mission to the audience who will have the most impact on our future – young people themselves.” UNICEF said Shakira was “part of a vanguard of young faces” that the agency plans to use as ambassadors as the 50th anniversary of Kaye’s appointment approaches. Currently, there are about 100 goodwill ambassadors chosen by various UN agencies. Other youthful ambassadors include 28-year-old US film star Angelina Jolie, who has represented the UN High Commissioner for Refugees since 2001.

SAVING AFRICA
Former South African president Nelson Mandela joined forces with do-good rockers Tuesday to launch a global phone and Internet campaign to raise awareness and money to fight the AIDS epidemic in Africa. The number 46664 was assigned to Mandela during his more than 18 years in prison under apartheid

The highlight of the campaign will be an all-star televised concert in Cape Town, South Africa, Nov. 29 featuring Beyonce, Queen, Bono, Britney Spears, 50 Cent, Pink and Shakira, which MTV hopes will reach a global audience of two billion people.

The Matrix Record With Shakira, Prep Debut Album
Sept 25,2003
With all the hits they've written for the likes of Britney, Ricky Martin and Avril, you'd think the Matrix wouldn't have any left for themselves. Of course, you'd be wrong. The production trio are about to begin work on their as-yet-untitled debut album and member Scott Spock has guaranteed that it will be packed with wall-to-wall smashes. "We've had a couple songs that we've written over the past year where we'd be like, 'Let's keep this one for ourselves,' " said Spock. The trio, which also includes husband-and-wife team Lauren Christy and Graham Edwards, will begin work on their debut as soon as they finish producing the upcoming album from garage rockers Mooney Suzuki (see "Mooney Suzuki Save Jack Black's Butt, Plan To Work With The Matrix"). "We got ourselves a guy and a girl singer, but we don't want to reveal who they are just yet," Spock said. The singers are both new and both unknown, but Spock speculated they?d be "very well-known" once the album comes out (see "Avril's Hitmakers Land Record Deal, Set To Make Hits For Themselves"). He described the Matrix songs as mainstream pop-rock hits, with a little twist. "It's real interesting stuff," he said. "People will hear it and say, 'Holy sh--, what's this?!' " The album is tentatively slated for release in the first half of 2004.
Before the Matrix album drops, there will be plenty of the group's signature shiny pop sound to go around. They just finished a week of writing and recording seven songs with Shakira at her ranch in Spain, an experience Spock said was energizing. "She's such a talent, she just gets in front of the mic and sings flawlessly and she's also an amazing writer," Spock said. "Spanish is her primary language, but we did lyrics with her and she's also quite the poet in English." Spock said the sound of the songs they recorded with Shakira is a little different from her English-language debut, Laundry Service. "It's got more of a rock tip to it," he said of her second English album. "It's a call back to the Cure and the Pretenders. It's definitely more of a rocker thing." You can also hear the Matrix's handiwork on a few songs from the debut of England's Busted, which is slated for release in the U.S. in 2004. The album will be a compilation of their previously released material and new Matrix songs. "They're like a cross between Good Charlotte and Alien Ant Farm, but put a bit more spice in it," Spock said. The Matrix have also written songs with another Canadian pop songstress who is prepping her debut
