It is hard to imagine celebrities being emotional. Let alone global mega pop stars. But, when Colombian singer and songwriter Shakira sat in a Dhaka hotel visibly shaken from her visit to Sidr-hit areas, it is easy to understand why she was chosen as a Unicef goodwill ambassador.
Speaking to The Daily Star after returning from the daylong tour, Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll passionately recalled her experience in the cyclone-hit areas, often pausing to sigh and reflect between sentences.
"She sang to me a song of grief. It was a beautiful song in Bengali...It said, 'Mother, wherever you are, write to me'. I will never forget her voice," Shakira recalled the moments she spent with Nipa, an 11-year-old girl left orphan by Sidr, in Patuakhali.
But, like so much of what she stands for, Shakira also found hope. "Amid all this calamity, sadness and grief, I saw kids playing, singing and smiling in this semi-destroyed school. It was like an oasis...of relief," she said, speaking about Child Friendly Spaces, an institution where children traumatised by the deadly cyclone's devastation spend their days playing and learning.
"This made me think more than ever that the world should focus on providing these safe spaces where the children can grow healthy up in places away from trouble, at least for a few hours," she said, her eyes beaming with the audacity of such hope.
"Where children can be children, play and sing. It's much more than learning, it's a place where children can socialise and communicate with children," she said.
"I loved hearing the kids say they dream about becoming doctors and nurses...They all had positive dreams. That's what I want to leave Bangladesh knowing some of these kids will be given the opportunity to accomplish their dreams," she said, wishing to see the results when she again visits Bangladesh.
Still coming to terms with what she had seen in the southern part of the country, Shakira said, "I was devastated to see that entire villages were wiped away. Everything they had was gone...that touched me. The loss of so many human lives...I will never forget the faces of the mothers who lost their children.
"Bangladesh and its people need attention, international attention from governments, NGOs and regular people as well," she said.
The Unicef goodwill ambassador had already planned on visiting Bangladesh but brought the visit forward after seeing the damage caused by cyclone Sidr. As part of her wider plans, she visited a Unicef project in Rajshahi where "hard-to-reach-children" spend days in centres away from the streets.
Shakira has been working with children since she was 18 when she built a foundation called Pies Descalzos, meaning "bare feet" in Spanish.
The seeds of inspiration had been sown a decade earlier at the age of eight. Her father was bankrupt and her family just lost most of what they had.
Her father used to take her to a park in the more run-down part of the town, where she found kids sniffing glue and was shattered by the sight of their hardship. "From that point I decided I will do something to help them one day," Shakira recalls.
"I always felt very committed to review the issues that children face, maybe because I grew up in a country like Colombia, where children face the same problems like children in Bangladesh and elsewhere," she said.
"Children are the most vulnerable population in the world and at the same time they are our only hope for a safer world," she said, adding, "We are all concerned about a better future and a more secure place for our children, our children's children and for us."
Any attempt to question that commitment is quickly foiled by a well-prepared, sharply honed answer when she was pressed on how she deals with the fact that in a few months she will be singing in a glitzy concert when the children here will still be struggling with their daily lives.
"I guess it's using that spotlight that shines on me during that concert and moving it away from me to put on the issues that need that attention. This is what I can do in my own small way," Shakira was unhesitant in her reply.
She feels this is a commitment to a broader movement, a collective call of the time and her generation.
"I'm sure my generation is not willing to tolerate any more of the brutalities in these countries. We are tired of it. In the next years, my generation will have the power and it's not little. So, it's a great power that we have to communicate and that's why I'm part of the social issues," she said passionately.
The 30-year-old feels that the passion is shared by others of her generation. "I can do things in a very small way in the community of young people who want to do something about all this. These little things make great changes.”

Historical romance closes festival

The big-screen adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel Love In The Time Of Cholera brought this year's AFI Film Festival in Hollywood to a close.
Shakira, who sings on the film's soundtrack, attracted the most attention, posing for photographers in a tight, leopard-print mini-dress, but fans screamed hysterically for actors Benjamin Bratt and Javier Bardem as they stepped onto the red carpet.
Both star in the film, which centres on a 50-year love triangle set in the late 19th and first decades of the 20th century.
Bratt told reporters that as soon as he heard about the project he had to be involved.
"Look, there was no hesitation whatsoever," he said.
"I mean there were just too many reasons to do it, not doing it wasn't even a consideration."
Making the movie cemented some special relationships for the actor, who added: "Everyone there, truly from the top down, was just overjoyed to be there and we formed some really good friendships, Javier and myself.
"There's a lot of incredible talent that was part of that whole ensemble, hopefully the film shows it."
Oscar-nominated actor Bardem said he was also determined to be a part of the film from the outset.
"Once I knew that the novel was going to happen I went to talk to (the director) and show myself to say 'well in case you need me I'll be here' - lucky enough he called me back," Bardem said.

Love in the time of Cholera Premiere

Shakira, 30, was in Las Vegas on Tuesday night to perform at the premiere of Love in the Time of Cholera, for which she wrote three songs. The film, based on the novel by fellow Colombian Gabriel García Márquez, about a lifelong love affair, struck a chord with the singer.
Of love, she says, "It's my primary nourishment. I think that nothing else in life, not even your career or music – well, what I'm saying is a bold statement – I think that nothing can substitute love as the propelling force of everyone's lives. It's number one on my list of priorities, of course."
Shakira's concert on Tuesday served as a benefit for her Fundación Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet Foundation), which promotes educational development in Colombia.

Oral Fixation Tour Playing at a Theater Near You

On November 13, Shakira will be releasing a Live DVD filmed during her Oral Fixation World Tour.
The release is a live DVD and behind the scenes footage from Shakira's l40-city, 2006/07 world tour which was attended by more than 2.5 million fans in North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia. Directed by Nick Wickham, the DVD features Shakira in l7 thrilling performances (listing below) with guest performances from Alejandro Sanz and Wyclef Jean. Also included are three bonus video clips, behind the scenes footage and a documentary of Shakira's visit to Colombia in support of her Pies Descalzos foundation which builds schools in poor areas of the country. A bonus CD of the live songs will be included with the DVD.
Shakira's Oral Fixation tour sold out all around the world, and she made history when she performed in front of 200,000 fans at Mexico City's Plaza del Zocalo, the largest crowd in Mexican history. She played at the pyramids in Egypt and for the first time in Dubai. The ORAL FIXATION TOUR dvd includes behind the scenes footage of Shakira during her world travels, meeting with fans, friends and world leaders, and a triumphant hometown visit to Baranquilla.

Bono, Alicia Keys, Shakira, Chris Rock and former President Bill Clinton will take part in a roundtable discussion on the state of youth activism, set to take place September 29 at the legendary Apollo Theater in New York. Keys and Shakira will also perform at the event.
The event, called "Giving - Live at the Apollo," is co-sponsored by MTV and the Clinton Global Initiative, and is being held in conjunction with the Initiative's annual three-day conference in New York.
At the roundtable, each individual will discuss their own efforts to bring about social change, and will invite youth around the world to join them in a brand-new initiative — one designed to improve communities here in the U.S. and help people living in the poorest places on the planet. The event will be moderated by MTV News correspondent Sway.
Other sponsors of the event include ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History (one.org), a coalition of more than 2.4 million Americans banded together to end to extreme global poverty and preventable disease; "Keep a Child Alive," which provides life-saving AIDS medicines directly to children and families with HIV/AIDS in Africa; and Fundacion ALAS, a coalition of artists, intellectuals and entrepreneurs dedicated to improving the health and education of Latin American children.
Both the discussion and the concert will be webcast live on Think.MTV.com, One.org and KeepAChildAlive.org. A TV special will be broadcast later on MTV, mtvU and MTV Tr3s.

according to her management, it was at a small private club where she performed

As you guys know Shakira could not perform last night on her concert at Arnhem - Netherlands due to a severe throat infection,
a lot of people were sad She did not come on stage but we have to be understanding, we are all humans and we all get sick once in a while, and this was her time...anyways Shaki is doing better today, and will try her best to continue with her tour.
Arnhem concert was postpone for March 17.

Glamorous ‘Hips-Don’t-Lie’ pop star, Shakira, has helped SEAT design a unique Leon Cupra as a competition prize, in order to raise money for her own charity. At a press conference in the Max Schmeling Halle in Berlin at the weekend - officially kicking off her European tour - SEAT and Shakira revealed the special Cupra that will benefit the star’s charity, the Fundación Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet Foundation).
The car, aptly named the Leon Pies Descalzos, is immediately identifiable by its striking lilac metallic paint, a colour also highlighted on several details inside. In addition, the interior features part-leather trim incorporating the Pies Descalzos logo. This emblem also graces the B-pillar, while polished black paint is used on the Cupra’s 18-inch alloy wheels.
SEAT announced its partnership with Shakira at the end of last year, a co-operation which involves supporting her European Tour, as well as her charity work. Her UK concert will also be the last venue of the tour, and will be held at Wembley Arena on 18th March.
‘The support for Pies Descalzos is very welcome,’ said Shakira. ‘The need for education and proper nutrition for the children in my home country of Colombia is very big and I trust that SEAT’s initiative will aid a lot.’
‘By supporting Shakira’s charity foundation, we show our social responsibility,’ commented Erich Schmitt, SEAT’s president. ‘All European countries visited by Shakira on her tour will incorporate the possibility to donate money to Pies Descalzos.’
The Leon Pies Descalzos was developed by SEAT in co-operation with Shakira. In the design process the pop star acted as a consultant on colours and materials, to create a totally unique car that one lucky person will be able to win at the end of the fundraising campaign in May.
The fundraising competition will be highlighted across many communication channels as part of SEAT’s promotion of the Shakira partnership. It will end on 15th May and the Leon prize car will be presented to its winner at the Barcelona Motor Show in June.
Those entering the competition will automatically donate one Euro (or one pound in the UK) to the foundation by sending their details in an SMS message to a dedicated number in each country in which Shakira is performing. For the UK, the number is 81161. Alternatively, a donation for any amount can be made at the Shakira/SEAT website www.catch-the-fever.com
The Leon Pies Descalzos that SEAT is donating to the fundraising campaign is worth 27,300 Euros in its equivalent version on the Spanish market. During the press conference in Berlin, Erich Schmitt handed over a cheque for the same amount to Shakira, giving the fundraising campaign a flying start.
The base for the car is the new Leon Cupra, which is due to hit UK showrooms at the beginning of March. Developing 240 PS, the new Cupra is SEAT’s most powerful model to date, and is the flagship of the marque’s sporty range of cars.
The Fundación Pies Descalzos is devoted to providing opportunities for deprived children in Colombia. It originated in Barranquilla, the hometown of Shakira on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, and is now reaching other parts of the country.
The goal is to improve the education, nutrition and lives of the thousands of displaced children who are living in perilous conditions in Colombia.
Shakira, one of today’s most successful, young and famous global pop artists, chose SEAT, the Spanish automotive company, as the main sponsor of her 2007 Shakira Oral Fixation European Tour.
