Reginald Clark worked in law enforcement before being hired by the Smith County Sheriff Office as a jailer on May 30, 2004. He resigned on September 23, 2005 and was rehired as a jailer on July 10, 2007.
Sergeant Hughes instructions from Sheriff Smith were to treat this incident exactly as if Sergeant Clark were a citizen. Sheriff Smith reiterated there would be no special allowances made for law enforcement officers.
"We have raised the bar and expectations of a higher standard for our law enforcement officers, and that bar will not be lowered under any circumstances," said Sheriff Larry Smith.
