though not all people liked him, most did, Shane Smith said. almost all respected him. If he was working your game, you knew it was a big game. Jury knew Smith since 1959 when they were making $3 for working a Pop Warner game.

the kids on the field to decide the game, Shane said. he was a mentor to many, many, many officials. course, no official was perfect.
Jury and Smith shared a dark officiating moment when they worked a boys basketball tournament game in December 1989. They were physically attacked by Victor Valley High players at the end of the game.
One of those special moments was a game in 2008, when Dick Smith and his sons worked a football game together, the opening of Redlands High School Dodge Field.
Smith remembered as an official who loved sports
no doubt officiating was his passion, Shane Smith said. when we were kids, it was working with youth. He was all about sports. He was a tremendous coach. the years, he said his father officiated football, basketball and baseball games. He last officiated about or six years ago as his health declined.
